FLAT, NOT DRAMATIC. He is out of breath and he has just noticed something: PUZZLED BEATS DEVASTATED. No self-pity anywhere. He is not upset that he failed, he is annoyed that something overruled him and would not say why, and that difference is what makes the second half of the film possible. THE TURN IS ONE WORD, "DECIDED". Everything before it is legs and lungs. "And I didn’t decide that" is where the film changes subject from the body to whoever is running it, and it lands as a complaint rather than a theory. AND THE LAST LINE IS A QUESTION, NOT A CONCLUSION. "So I want to know who set it" is the door the vortex opens three shots later. He is not looking for a place, he is looking for a person, and he finds one.
