What is said over this shot
MANANNineteen twenty three. Hill puts runners on a treadmill and measures everything they do. His answer is simple. Fatigue is in the muscle.MANANYou run. The muscle uses up its oxygen. The fuel is spent. And when the tank reads empty, the body stops.

MANAN NEVER WRITES ANYTHING. He thinks it and Viveka puts it in the air, because Viveka can read him. IT IS A BOARD IN A NEW MEDIUM. The three lines hold the CENTRE of the display and the pictures are pushed to the edges: the body at the far left, the gauge at the far right, and nothing else floating anywhere, because a board has one thing on it at a time. THE LINES ARE: FATIGUE IS IN THE MUSCLE / THE FUEL IS SPENT / THE TANK IS EMPTY THEY DO NOT ARRIVE TOGETHER. Each line appears under the line being spoken, the way a highlighter runs across a sentence in a book, so the display fills as the argument is made and the third line lands on the last word. That is why an EMPTY PLATE ships with this frame: the display with the body and the gauge in place and no writing at all, so the lines can be animated in one at a time. Read the left board down and then the right and you have the whole film.
